Blockchain-elections: an interesting Russian experience in 2018

The largest blockchain-elections took place in Russia

Digital technologies penetrate into the spheres of life of not only the ordinary person, but also the whole state. Thus, in 2018, blockchain-elections were held for the first time in Russia. During the voting, the innovative Polys online platform was used. Kaspersky Lab, one of the world’s largest creators of IT security software solutions, developed it.

What is Polys?

Polys is a system that allows online voting using blockchain technology. It provides clean, transparent, fair and legitimate elections.

Distribution database of voice processing protects the system from hacking and makes it impossible to steal data, as they are stored on devices of all network participants. Thus, due to decentralization, Polys protects all information on elections.

Where did blockchain-elections take place?

The Polys platform was tested on December 12, 2018 for the election of deputies of the Youth Parliament under the Saratov Regional Duma. The results were impressive: more than 40 thousand people participated in the voting at 110 polling stations in 45 districts. Representatives of Kaspersky Lab reported that this allows us to consider the last blockchain elections as the largest in history among those that used this technology.

Positive results

The effectiveness of the Polys platform is obvious. They spent only 7 hours on the organization of elections and counting of votes. The results were announced immediately, and not after a couple of days, as is customary during the traditional voting of voters with the help of ballots.

Also managed to avoid falsification. Roman Aleshkin, Polys platform manager, noted that voices were encrypted with cryptography. This means that it is impossible to find out who supported whom. The peculiarity of the technology made it impossible to cheat results.

Another positive point is the participation of young people in elections and general support for Polys. As is known, voter turnout in Russia at the age of 18-34 years is usually low. But reports that a modern technology will be used during the voting have attracted the attention of a young audience. A poll made at the time of election showed that 83% of respondents supported the use of Kaspersky Lab’s development in the future.

Examples of blockchain-elections in the world

Elections to the Saratov Regional Duma are far from the only example of successful operation of the Polys. For example, the system used the party “Yabloko” for the primaries.

Also, the development will involve not only in Russia. So, voting for the president of the Mahidol University Student Club (Thailand) was also held with the help of Polys. The organization, process and calculation took only 3 days. Earlier on the same elections, but with paper ballots, took from 3 to 4 weeks.

Polys also showed itself at specialized events in Switzerland and Canada. In both cases, the system was used at blockchain conference and the hackathon to vote for the best ICO project. As of 2019, political parties and universities of the world remain the main customers of the technology.
