History of GoPro: from idea to worldwide corporation
If a person sees someone riding a bicycle with a small square camera attached to the steering wheel, or notices that someone is climbing a lift with a black rectangle mounted on a helmet, then the observer knows that something will happen now.
The mini-camera, known as GoPro, has an excellent reputation in the field of extreme sports and travel with amazing videos and photos. GoPro’s story begins in Australia with a surfboard and a 26-year-old guy named Nick Woodman. A resident of California studied art and in 1997 graduated from the University of California at San Diego with great interest in the technology industry.
His first two post-college entrepreneurship attempts included the creation of EmpowerAll.com and Funbug.com websites – both were unsuccessful. In order to recover from the disappointing beginnings that he went surfing in Australia with his girlfriend Jill Scully.
While surfing the waves, Woodman had an idea. He wanted to shoot high-quality photos for surfing from neat corners, without spending large sums of money on first-class equipment, usually designed for professional athletes. So the idea was born GoPro, a small camera that can be tied on the surfer’s wrist.
The couple returned to California and began to raise funds necessary for the realization of the idea of Woodman. Using Woodman’s savings and his father’s loan of about $ 250,000, Nick founded GoPro Inc. (originally Woodman Labs, Inc.) in 2002.
The first GoPro looked a bit different from today’s models. Introduced in 2004, HERO was a 35 mm camera that could be worn on the user’s wrist. Even then, she knew how to take photographs at a maximum depth of five meters of water.
For comparison, HERO6, which has a similar size and was available for purchase in 2017, is also capable of playing 4K60 video and incorporates technologies such as voice activation, compatibility with the Karma drone and a touchscreen. GoPro’s latest innovation, Fusion, takes action to a whole new level, allowing users to create fully spherical videos.
The transition from a wrist strap to more modern installation methods occurred in 2006, when Woodman decided to try installing GoPro on a carrack. This experiment led the GoPro team to researching and developing alternative camera attachment methods.
History of GoPro: the company’s popularity
The resulting accessories allowed GoPro to escape from the world of surfing to other sports hemispheres. For example, you can install GoPro on ski poles and helmets.
In 2018, GoPro cameras appeared in more than 100 countries. The company’s headquarters is located in San Mateo, California, and has branches in other US states, as well as in other countries, including France and Hong Kong. By the way, the technology company initially had only three employees.
At the state of 2018, the number of employees of the corporation is 963. Although this number is not as large as in previous years due to a series of layoffs, it still shows impressive growth.
However, the creation of a company is more than the release of a new product and its distribution around the world. Since the creation of the idea in 2002, GoPro has gradually developed both its product and the customer community.
Stories about jumping from the rocks unite people, and watching inspiring videos about rescue missions, as well as videos about different cultures, shapes how people look at the world around them.
GoPro recognized the power of the media and used it to create a solid community base that is still widespread today.
